i can relate to the words of this song. i once stood at the top of a coal shaft, where the workers would board and ride down. the air that rushed up, the darkness of the hole where my uncle and cousin and many other men rode. it sent cold shivers throughout me.
the vein of coal ran deep into families in southern illinois and strip mines took more than coal from the land.
