Going on about Bob

I have a new job!

I'm working as a general get 'er done guy at a cartographic library/museum. That means maps, son, and don't you forget it.

Actually, this institution is a division of the university library where I have worked for the past 7 years or so, so I'm still swimming in the same pool, ya might say.

Which has little to do with what I was going to say. I was going to say, I really like Ray Ortlund's blog, Christ is Deeper Still. That's a good title, don't you think? By way of personal application:
Christ is deeper still than my new job.
There you go! And all the stuff going on at that job, and the pressures and "circumstances" associated with it. In fact, speaking of circumstances, Ray recently quoted Francis Schaeffer concerning them:
The central problem of our age is not liberalism or modernism, nor the old Roman Catholicism or the new Roman Catholicism, nor the threat of communism, nor even the threat of rationalism and the monolithic consensus which surrounds us [nor, I would add today, postmodernism or materialistic consumerism or visceral sensualism or whatever]. All these are dangerous but not the primary threat. The real problem is this: the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, individually or corporately, tending to do the Lord’s work in the power of the flesh rather than of the Spirit. The central problem is always in the midst of the people of God, not in the circumstances surrounding them.
Wonderful startling truth, that. Again, by way of application: whatever is going on around you at your job (conflict with your boss, boring work, low pay, etc.), the real problem, Schaeffer would say, is in you trying to deal with these things and navigate these circumstances "in the power of the flesh."

Hmmm. I plead guilty. Guilty as it gets.

Along the same lines, Ray recently excerpted a 1987 interview with one of my spiritual heroes, Eugene Peterson, in which Peterson said this:
...my job is not to solve people's problems or make them happy, but to help them to see the grace that is operating in their lives. It's hard to do, because our whole culture is going the other direction, saying that if you're smart enough and get the right kind of help, you can solve all your problems. . . . The work of spirituality is to recognize where we are -- the particular circumstances of our lives -- to recognize grace and say, "Do you suppose God wants to be with me in a way that does not involve changing my spouse or getting rid of my spouse or my kids, but in changing me, and doing something in my life that maybe I could never experience without this pain and this suffering?"
Ah, circumstances again. Have you noticed that we use that word as a euphemism for things we'd rather not be going through. I mean, a heavy debt load is a "circumstance," but a holiday in Hawaii certainly is not. Which leads me to this thought: we're so emotionally preoccupied with wishing things were not the way they are. Have you ever noticed that? As an alternative, we might want to try being preoccupied with what God would like to do in and through us right there in the midst of the circumstances.

Well, that's all. Now go over to Christ is Deeper Still and just read. Good stuff over there.

Bob,

Great post. I love the Schaeffer quote. It always begins with home.

That said, I sure wish things were not the way they are in my own household. And I'm not going to apologize for that, since things are really difficult. I think it's okay to seek God's grace in tough times and to dwell in that grace while still hoping that things will improve.

Thanks.

Yes, and I think that's an important point that I should have made in the body of the post. A man who is sick with cancer should not be criticized for wishing he were better, or a homeless woman for wishing she had a home. But we do spend a lot of our emotional time and energy on wishing for more of this, less of that, etc.

Where is the line? There really is no line. But there is an accompanying understanding for the Christian that it is his/her calling to rejoice in all things.

That is as mysterious as it gets though! I cannot do it "in the flesh," and my trying to do so is a part of the greatest problem the world faces (re: Schaeffer).

Dan, I'm honored that you stopped by and took the time to comment. I pray that God would give you rejoicing now in the hard times as you come to know Him in a more intimate way, and also that God would light your way to better times.

Hello,

I am new to your site...I was quickened by the Holy Spirit this morning to visit your site...I found it visiting Dan's site...of which I was led to Dan's site by the Holy Spirit a few days ago.

I love that quote of Schaeffer's..."The real problem is this: the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, individually or corporately, tending to do the Lord’s work in the power of the flesh rather than of the Spirit. "

That is the real problem. The church continues to 'DO'...instead of being led by the Holy Spirit. There is a 'works' mentality that is prevelant within the church and it grieves the Holy Spirit. The flesh profits nothing and it is ONLY the Spirit that gives life.

Interesting, b/c the Holy Spirit spoke this very TRUTH to Dan on a recent blog of his. Dan argued in his blog "The not so good Samaritan" that the real problem of the church has been in NOT listening to the lost. My suggestion to Dan was that the problem of the church has been that of not listening to the Holy Spirit.

Unfortunately, Dan jumped to the conclusion that I was implying that we are not to listen to the hurts of people nor have compassion. I explained to Dan that only the Holy Spirit can prepare the heart and give ears to hear...and I only want to be led to those that are ready to receive what the Lord wants to share. To venture out on my own...to come up with ideas on how to 'reach the lost'...is all flesh and is as DUNG in the Lord's eyes.

Dan kept going back to the 'feel good' mentality of the apostate message...that we are called to meet the felt needs of the world. No, we are not called to CODDLE the flesh. The flesh is corrupt and needs to die. We are to be led by the Spirit. The Spirit will lead us to those that are ready to hear...in fact the Spirit will orchestrate the circumstances for our paths to cross. It is all HIS WORK.

I was not led to argue with Dan...for only the Holy Spirit can give understanding and I see that Dan is not to that place yet...the Holy Spirit still has some more tearing down to do within Dan. Does that sound harsh? No that is called LOVE.

See, that is what is happening with Dan right now and many within the 'church'. The flesh is being dealt with and the Lord is using all different kinds of circumstances to purge the dross so that the GOLD can come forth. The Lord loves Dan whether Dan believes that right now or not. The Lord has allowed all the present circumstances to come into Dan's life for His Holy purposes. It is all FOR Dan. To work the old out so that the new can come forth.

Dan wrote..."I sure wish things were not the way they are in my own household. And I'm not going to apologize for that, since things are really difficult. I think it's okay to seek God's grace in tough times and to dwell in that grace while still hoping that things will improve."

Dan is still fighting the place of surrender. What if the Lord's answer is 'no, your circumstances will not change.' Will he then be offended with the Lord? Will he then become the very man he saw walking the highway?

Our inheritance is not of this world (homes, cars, lands, ect..)it is the KINGDOM. As John said..."Woe to the inhabitors of the earth".
We are called to walk as our Lord walked...for he who loses his life shall save it.

Far be it from me to build up what the Lord is tearing down or tear down what the Lord is building up.

Oh yes, let it be known I have been torn down myself and I praise His name for it. All that can be shaken has and will continue to be shaken until that which cannot REMAINS ...the solid rock of CHRIST. I also am very familiar with the refining fires of the Lord...and have come to love His cross. The cross is self denial, it is surrender, it is coming to the place in your life where you have been so THOROUGHLY dealt with by Father that you too learn to say the words "not my will but yours be done".

If there is any fight left in you...then YOU ARE NOT DEAD YET.

There is a very REAL PLACE of BEING CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST. Most in Christendom have no clue about this glorious truth.
It is only in sharing the cross that we then get to share in His glory.

How does one become an overcomer? He overcomes.

TruthBeTold.

sounds like a big project, this map room thing. THAT should keep you busy for awhile.

MAPS...they can come in handy in certain CIRCUMSTANCES. :-) but, one has to actually HAVE the map in-hand...and be able to READ the thing.

GRACE, however, is a whole different kettle of fish. it always COVERS us even when we don't have a CLUE of where we are.

and no matter where we ARE along the road, none of us EVER really have a clue of WHERE we are. we may THINK that we do...but, we DON'T.

HOWEVER, we CAN be certain that GOD does.

God's grace is never ending, as is HIs Love for us. we have no map, but we have a guide. the HOly Spirit of the living God.

i pray that every time you look at a map, that you will see God's love for you.
