Read any good books lately?

When in doubt about what to write, it's always a good idea to return to the subject of books. If you read a lot, you probably want to talk about the books you're reading. You probably want to know what other people are reading, too. You might long for that rare occasion when someone says to you, "Read any good books lately?" To which I would reply:

Yes, as a matter of fact. I'm reading Graeme Galsworthy, for one. His is a name that comes up now and then at Christ-centered blogs. I recently purchased an anthology of three of his short books called The Goldsworthy Trilogy. According to the back cover blurb:

...an essential guide for those who seek to understand the whole Bible, in all its unity and diversity, in the light of the goseple of Jesus.

"In the light of the gospel of Jesus." Key words, those. As I mentioned here, one of my resolutions for the new year is to read the OT more, so this book reaches me at the right moment.

And then I'm also reading a scifi thriller called Axis, by Robert Charles Wilson. This is the recently-published second book in a prospective trilogy (the first was also tersely named: Spin). This one, like its predecessor, is a real page-turner. Imaginative, humane science-fiction, with characters that really live.

Speaking of books and reading, I see that Jared has reported on his reading in 2007. Also, Andrew Le Peau, who is an editor at Intervarsity, provides his own list over at Andy Unedited. Both these bloggers include a healthy dose of fiction in their reading diet, I notice. Dr. Bob approves. To give ourselves to an engaging and even masterful storyteller feeds a deep human need. That's what I think anyway.
